For Mysterious Objects at Noon Min-Wei Ting and Gavin Maughfling have made ‘L.H.R.S.I.N.’,  a collaborative film work which will be shown on two monitors side by side, with sound and random juxtaposition playing a key role.

We agreed to set ourselves technical limitations, using only i-phone footage and basic editing in i-movie; while Min-Wei is a highly experienced  film-maker, Gavin’s practice has to date been primarily as a painter, though with an increasing interest in film.

We filmed our sections over the Christmas break and into early January; Min-Wei’s back home in Singapore on a family visit, Gavin’s in London and Berlin. Min-Wei’s footage includes  Singapore at Christmas – a supermarket, ferry lights strung on trees, teh tarik, a cycle ride, as well as spliced footage from TV (cookery and travel programmes, news items). Gavin’s include a march through Walthamstow celebrating the Prophet’s birthday, crowds at Waterloo, Angela Merkel in Paris, solitary strangers on the South Bank and snow in Berlin on New Year’s Day.

We met up at Goldsmiths one day in late January to edit our clips and sound and to make the installation decisions that make up the final piece.

“I am an instigator to my collaborator. Sending across what I see, hear and feel. From Singapore to London: a drop of spittle, a passing canopy of trees, teh tarik, Prince Andrew, the rush of wind, mutating pixels of the Philippines…goldfish. Nothing but also maybe something. Let’s see what Gavin comes back with.”
